Mandolin Workshop

String Theory Music, Bend OR

Harmonic Improvisation: Improvising Based on the Chord Structure Improvising a solo based on a chord progression is a common approach that most experienced improvisers are quite comfortable with. Scales, arpeggios, and hot licks are all part of it, but knowing where the chords are changing or better yet, anticipating the chord changes in your solo will make your improvised melodic creation sound like the masterpiece that it is, even though it may not sound like the original melody at all. We will explore the use of scales, arpeggios and pentatonic licks over a variety of chord progressions. Students should already have a basic understanding of scales, chord tones, arpeggios, and be able to name the notes on the mandolin up to the seventh fret.
